6th Asian Cities Summit 2023

All India Institute of Local Self-Government (AIILSG) is organising the 6th Asian Cities Summit and Mayors’ Forum in New Delhi on 5-7 April 2023. The theme of the conference is ‘Inclusive and Resilient Cities’. The first day of the Summit is dedicated to Women Leadership Workshop for elected women. The main sessions will held on April 6-7, 2023.
AIILSG successfully organised the 5th South Asian Cities Summit supported by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Ministry of External Affairs, Government of Goa and Goa Tourism Development Corporation, wherein one hundred cities from South Asia participated as City Partners. United Cities and Local Governments—Asia Pacific (UCLG-ASPAC), World Bank, European Union, UN-Habitat, United Nations University (UNU), NALAS, CITYNET, J CLAIR, FSLGA-Sri Lanka, Municipal Association of Bangladesh (MAB), MUAN-Nepal, and several other distinguished national and international organisations have been our key partners. Studies suggest that by 2050, 70 per cent of the global population will be living in urban centres, some in cities of more than 10 million people. The increasing urban population will need better services and infrastructure.
Intending to build a better urban future, we have built a Forum where city mayors and senior officials from municipal corporations worldwide share their knowledge and learn from each other’s experiences. Cities also provide details of their contribution to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and join hands to build a better urban future for coming generations. The Summit is a step in the right direction to forge long-term city to city collaborations of Indian and world cities. AIILSG has been getting overwhelming response to its SAC Summit from the cities in South Asia and other Asian Countries. Keeping in the mind the growing relevance of the event among other Asian Countries, South Asian Cities Summit is being renamed as Asian Cities Summit. It will hopefully engage more cities from the Asia Pacific region.

Urbanisation in AsiaUrbanisation in Asia

Asian cities are growing at an unprecedented rate. Urbanisation is a global phenomenon, but most future urban growth is expected in Asia. It is estimated, according to the United Nations, by 2050, two-thirds of the world’s population will live in cities.

In the last twenty years, between 2000 and 2020, the urban population in Asia grew by over 750 million people, an increase of 42%. Today, 20 out of the 30 largest urban agglomerations are in Asia. As of 2021, Asia is home to 54% of the world’s urban population, with around 2.5 billion people living in urban areas. In 1950, Asia was merely 28 per cent urbanised. Asian urbanisation is a complex and multidimensional trend with significant economic, social, and environmental implications for the region. Climate change impacts are also threatening and causing havoc in many urban areas. It may further exacerbate. To address these challenges, several Asian countries have launched initiatives to promote sustainable urban development, such as India’s Smart Cities Mission, Singapore’s Sustainable Singapore Blueprint, South Korea’s New Deal, Indonesia’s National Urban Policy, Japan’s Society 5.0 among various initiatives from different nations in the region. Intending to build a better urban future with collaborations and collective actions, All India Institute of Local Self-Government (AIILSG) is organising the 6th edition of its flagship event, Asian Cities Summit, in New Delhi, India, on April 5-7, 2023.

Agenda

3rd Women Leadership Workshop 202305 April 2023

BACKGROUND
Over the years, various studies have stressed the importance of empowering women in business and politics. Women have made some serious strides. They’ve gone from struggling just to get a foothold in various sectors to holding some of the top roles in the male-dominated domains. In Asia, women may only hold 11% of ministerial posts in the region, some countries are making headways. For example, Indonesia is leading the charge with a government that boasts a whopping 25.7% representation of women. And in India, a recent UN study found that a staggering 44% of local body members are women - that’s over 1.3 million elected women. Even in parliament, women are starting to make some serious headway, thanks in no small part to the leadership of the country’s current female president, Ms. Droupadi Murmu.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The aim is to bring together women leaders from across various sectors, including elected and municipal officers, to develop their leadership skills and enable them to learn from each other. This platform will provide these women with much-needed guidance, mentorship, and networking opportunities. Not only that, government officials and policymakers who champion policies and initiatives for entrepreneurs and leaders will also be in attendance. NGOs and development organisations that work towards empowering women and promoting gender equality are also encouraged to participate, to learn about innovative approaches and best practices for supporting women entrepreneurs and leaders. The 3rd World Women Leadership workshop will take place on the 5th of April at the Studio hall in Hotel Aloft by Marriott. The workshop will be conducted back-to-back with the 6th Asian Cities Summit, which will take place on April 6-7, 2023
OBJECTIVES

→ To identify the obstacles that are preventing women from accessing the resources they need to become successful entrepreneurs

→ To identify the barriers that hinders women access to political powers and examine the different types of quotas and effectiveness in promoting gender equality in politics

→ To explore the strategies to overcome the barriers and provide recommendations for creating a more gender inclusive leadership cultur
